Vasantha Stesin is a Nationally Accredited Mediator with a postgraduate qualification from the University of Queensland. She is also an experienced corporate and commercial solicitor/litigator with prior qualifications in pharmacy, has been admitted to the Bars of England and Wales, Singapore and is a practising solicitor in Australia. She holds a Masters in Law from the University of London. Vasantha has worked internationally, in training, marketing and business development, within the multinational pharmaceutical industry covering about 15 jurisdictions and began legal practice originally in the United Kingdom. Her legal and corporate experience in commercial and litigious matters, developed by working at major Australian and international law firms, has given her keen insight into the nature of disputes faced by parties and has motivated her to direct her practice towards the use of Alternative Dispute Resolution as an effective model to resolve disputes both prior to and even after the commencement of litigation.
Vasantha is an excellent communicator and has well developed people skills which enable her to assess the nature of the dispute and the parties in dispute. She is often able to assist parties to seek clarity around their dispute and come to resolution that does not involve costly litigation.
Vasantha mediates regularly and is on several panels including that of the Office of the Victorian Small Business Commissioner, the Single List of External Mediators’ for the Magistrates’ Court of Victoria, the Civil Mediation Program for the Dispute Settlement Centre of Victoria, the Arts Law Centre of Australia and the Elder Mediation Australasian Network (she has trained in Elder Mediation with a view to obtaining international accreditation) . She conducts private mediations through appointment by solicitors in private practice, when parties are directed to mediation by various courts and in cases involving harassment and bullying. She often also uses conflict coaching and other appropriate forms of dispute resolution, where necessary.
Vasantha was a sub-committee member of the Victorian Chapter of LEADR and IAMA (a national organisation of mediators, arbitrators, adjudicators and expert determinors) and has been involved in the integration of IAMA (institute of Arbitrators and Mediators Australia) and LEADR in Victoria and is now a committee member serving Resolution Institute's Special Interest Group for Mediation. She actively participates in the mentoring program organised by Victorian Women Lawyers and mentors lawyers including those seeking to specialise in ADR.
Apart from Vasantha’s legal and commercial expertise in the health and pharmaceutical arenas, her academic expertise has included being part of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of New South Wales teaching in their Masters of Medical Science (for allied health professionals) and Diploma of Pharmaceutical Medicine (for medical practitioners) for 12 years and more recently at Monash University. She enjoys the teaching and mentoring of students from all disciplines.
Vasantha draws on over 34 years of experience in the corporate and legal worlds and frequently uses skills developed over these years when mediating, conflict coaching and advising parties in dispute.
